August is the last month of Winter, making it peak tourist season in Cairns due to our wonderfully warm winter weather! Sunny days and mild nights makes Cairns the perfect place for a Winter Getaway to escape the cold with average temperatures in August ranging from 17 to 26° Celsius.  The city will be bustling with people, so make sure to book any tours you are looking at in advance to make sure you don’t miss out!

Visit the most beautiful locations in the World’s Oldest Surviving Rainforest, head out snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, or explore the unique daily markets in Kuranda! There are lots of events happening in Cairns in month so check out our list below to see what events you can catch.

Cairns Cup Carnival – Sat 3 & Sat 10 August

That time of the year has come and the Cairns Cup Carnival is on again. Running over 2 big Saturdays, the Cairns Cup Carnival is one of the biggest social events of the year. With a variety of ticket types available to suit everyone, it’s a great excuse to dress up and get together with friends. Hoodoo Gurus – Thurs 8 August SOLD OUT

Making music for over 30 years, Australian favourites the Hoodoo Gurus are bringing their tour to Cairns for an intimate show at the Tanks. Unfortunately, this show sold out very quickly so to those who were lucky enough to get tickets enjoy the show! More information here.

Pierce Brothers – Fri 16 August

Coming back to Australia off the back of sell out shows in the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA, Aussie twin duo, The Pierce Brothers are bringing their energetic, world-class show to Cairns. Xavier Rudd @ Kuranda Amphitheatre – Sun 18 Aug

Cairns Festival – Fri 23 Aug to Sun 1 Sept

The annual Cairns Festival is one of the biggest community events of the year with fantastic events happening over the week-long festival. Some of the main events are:

  • Grand Parade & Fireworks: Sat 24 3pm-9:30pm Cairns Esplanade
  • Elements Collective Dance Party: Sun 25 5-5:30pm Cairns Esplanade Stage

  • Carnival on Collins: Sun 1 Sept 9am-3pm Cairns Botanic Gardens

Lee Kernaghan – Thurs 29 August

Targa GBR – Fri  30 to Sun 1 August

After the first successful GBR Targa last year, this great multi-day race event is back. There are a number of locations over the 3 day event that you can make your way to viewing location for race stages; otherwise there is the Ceremonial Start at Reef Hotel & Casino Friday 30th 7:30am to 9:30am, Targa Expo at the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday 30th from 6pm to 9pm $10, Targafest on the Esplanade Saturday 31st 5pm to 9pm (free), and the Official Finish at Cairns Convention Centre on Sunday 1st September from 2:45pm to 5:30pm.
